What a split does

Both bottles start at the identical proof and composition; only volume divides. If a pour was 30 percent of the original, it is 30 percent of both children. From the next pour onward they diverge. When and why to split.

The lineage subtlety

If you track how much of each original pour survives, a split divides each survivor's remaining volume by the fraction but leaves its original size untouched. Get that wrong and a split-then-merge round trip double-counts. The full accounting.
