The math

The Ship of Theseus, measured in ounces

2 minute read · The Blending School

The Greeks asked: replace every plank of a ship, one by one, and is it still the same ship? Your bottle runs the experiment in real time, and unlike the Greeks, you can do the math.

The paradox, poured

Day one, your bottle is 100 percent founding pours. Every glass out removes a little of them; every new pour dilutes what remains. Two years later, is any of that first Eagle Rare still in there? The romantic answer is "in spirit." The mathematical answer is "yes, 8 percent of it, and here is the number."

How survival is computed

Every pour out removes each component in proportion to its share. If the first pour makes up 30 percent of the bottle and you drink 2 ounces, you drank 0.6 ounces of the first pour. Fold that across every event since day one and each original pour has a precise survival figure: how much of it, in ounces, physically remains.

after pouring p oz from V oz total:
each component's remainder x (V - p) / V

Run that update per event, in order, and the meter falls out of the ledger for free. This is why the record matters: survival cannot be reconstructed later, only carried forward.

Splits and merges, the trap

Split a bottle and both children carry pieces of the same original pours. Merge them back and a naive calculation counts the same origin twice. The honest method tracks each original pour's identity through the family tree, so a split-then-merge round trip lands exactly where it started. Getting this wrong is easy, which is why Thief & Blend treats it as engine math with tests rather than spreadsheet math with hope.

Fully Theseus'd

Eventually a founding pour's survival hits zero: the last drop of the first whiskey leaves in some ordinary Tuesday glass. When nothing of the original remains, the bottle has fully turned over. Same vessel, same name, same lineage, none of the original liquid. Is it the same bottle? The Greeks never settled it. You at least get a date for when the question became real, and it deserves a toast.
