Adding water: dilution math that round-trips

2 minute read · The Blending School

Water is the one ingredient with a proof of zero, which makes its math the cleanest in the bottle: one equation, solvable in either direction.

V1 x P1 = V2 x P2

Starting volume times starting proof equals ending volume times ending proof. The alcohol is conserved; water just spreads it thinner.

Worked: bringing 110 down to 100

You have 20 ounces at 110 proof and want 100:

20 x 110 = V2 x 100
V2 = 2200 / 100 = 22 oz
water to add = 22 - 20 = 2 oz

Two ounces of water. And it round-trips: run the blend formula on 20 oz at 110 plus 2 oz at 0 proof and you get exactly 100. Two formulas, one answer, which is how you know the books are honest.

Why dilute at all

A barrel-proof-heavy bottle can creep past the range where its flavors show best. Proof is not quality; it is intensity, and every blend has a proof where it opens up. Some keepers ride high on purpose. Others hold a target band and use small water additions as a trim tab. Both are legitimate house styles, and the record is what lets you find your bottle's sweet spot on evidence instead of vibes.

Small additions, big leverage

At bottle scale, water is powerful. In the example above, 2 ounces in 22 moved the proof a full 10 points. A teaspoon in a glass is a rounding error; a shot glass of water in the bottle is a decision. Add in small increments, taste, and record each one, because unrecorded water is the fastest way to lose track of what the bottle actually is.

The mass caveat, honestly

Ethanol and water contract slightly on mixing, so volume math runs a small fraction off from the exact figure a distillery lab would compute by mass. For home purposes the error is far below your measuring cup's precision. It is worth knowing the simplification exists, and worth ignoring in practice.
